Task 5 impact covid has on sport and participation
Citation:
The loss of sponsorships, merchandise and broadcasting sales in sport is due to the loss of revenue and will take years to pre pandemic ways. ( Skinner 2018)
Direct quote from book or journal:
Woodward (2020) said” the absence of the game illustrates the frustration and emotion of fans”
Paraphrased sentence:
The pandemic has caused a lot of disruption worldwide across all sports such as football and rugby. This has perhaps been the most disruption caused since World War II. The disruption of the pandemic had led to events being postponed such as the Euros and the Olympics. This meant fans had no sport to watch as everything was called off.
Indirect quote with 3+authors:
Engebretsen, Bahr and Cook (2014) state the rhetoric emerging from international sporting organisations such as the IOC ( international Olympic committee) has emphasised the importance of protecting athletes’ health.
Direct quote:
Malik(2020) states “the pandemic situation has made us stronger and more eager to participate”.
Descriptive paragraph:
Impact on sports and physical activity:
According to Sport England, people were less active in early 2020. This is because people were doing less than 30 minutes of activities a week or nothing at all. The activity levels are starting to recover following the pandemic. Between November 2020 and November 2021, 61.4% of the population were active and 27.2% were inactive. The recovery commenced in mid March of 2021. There was a rise of 3% to the population getting active. Covid also led to many professional athletes to become less active because their sports were called off. This included the Premier League, EFL and the Women Super League. These were called off until April 3rd 2020. UEFA stated that “ the Champions League and the Europa League have been put on hold”. The governing body also said “ further decisions will be communicated in due course on when these matches will take place”. This is according to UEFA.Com. However, while the games in England, Spain, Italy and America were called off, France and Germany were able to play their matches behind closed doors. The activity levels for adolescents and children show that more than 70% of children and adolescents were getting active with their parents and carers according to Sport England. Sport England also state that 93% of children and adolescents enjoyed getting active with their family. This was also similar for adults. Also participation levels decreased for kids during the pandemic as their parents/careers decided against them continuing to take part in sport and physical activity. This explains that everybody from kids, adolescents and adults all struggled to take part in participation throughout the pandemic.
Critical paragraph:
Impact of covid in sports and physical activity:
Football clubs were hit hard by the pandemic in the 2019/2020 season as they lost lots of money which would have helped them financially. According to the Daily Mail, all premier league clubs combined lost a total of £618 million with Manchester United being hit the most with a los of £118 million in revenue. For other clubs across Europe, teams like Barcelona and Real Madrid also lost lots of money with 97 million euros lost and 200 million lost in revenue for Barcelona and Real Madrid losing 300 million euros in revenue. This has an impact on participation levels in sports because without the money for the clubs, then they won’t be able to spend the money on players. This will then make it difficult for players to participate for their clubs. An example of this is Carlos Vela who played for LA FC said he chose to remain home with his family rather than playing for his club. This is according to the LA Times. There were also athletes who couldn’t take part in sport and physical activity as well as athletes who decided not to take part. According to Reuters.Com, 19 professional athletes were unable to participate in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. This was due to Covid-19 and the athletes testing positive for this. This emphasises that covid has impacted professional football clubs and their money as well as athletes who couldn’t take part or athletes who didn’t want to take part.
